Are you one of the people who is destined to become one of those long distance movers this summer? If so, you are probably one in a million. There will be some 6 million American families moving at some time this year. And June, July and August are the months when most of them move. In fact, so many people become movers in these months that it has been designated as “moving season.”

People who are moving temporarily might look into renting storage pods to keep their belongings in one place. However, there are quite a few movers this summer who will probably be moving on quite a small scale. Some of them will be college students who are looking for an internship or part time job. And some of these long distance movers will be kids from places in the West or Midwest who are going back to family members in the region after maybe going to college at NYU or UCLA.

The crowd who choose to become long distance movers are diverse. And they are an interesting group as well. They may not be the same as the Okies who use to travel from the Great Plains to find work in California. Thankfully, most of them have more to spend and better social infrastructures to rely upon. Nonetheless, a lot of movers this summer will be moving around the country’s vast highway system looking for work, on the coast or sometimes in the West where they can find work in the energy sector.

Some people who are moving this summer might be returning home for the first time in a long time. They might be reuniting with family members who had all but forgotten about them. Everyone has their own motives for moving. But as long as there are methods to meet their needs and moving is what keeps them motivated, it can never entirely be a bad thing.

Here are some moving tips so you can make the transition stress free and satisfying. These are even useful for long distance moving. Follow the three tips and you will be on your way to making new memories.

1. Package up items in an organized fashion

Pack up items in boxes and label each box into a category. If you have many items, it would be wise to make lists of everything in those boxes and tape it to the box, or even write it on it! This is a good time to clear out everything that you think you can do without, so donate, throw out, and sell things you could get rid of. Remember the less weight you have to take on, the easier it is to move.

2. Hire movers fast!

Get movers to take items you want them to take as soon as you can and try to have them move as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. This way you do not have to hire them three or four times. This part is imperative, do not have the hired movers take any priceless items, jewelry, heirlooms, cash, or paper files. If these are lost or damaged, you cannot get them back despite what the contract says. Travel with these personally. To move these things, get pods and hitch that to your vehicle to take along for the ride.

3. Be prepare for the worst

When using long distance movers, and sometimes short distance, they usually stay on time for when they move. For you and your family, a schedule may change and you have to go to the new home a day early or a day later or more! Be prepared for this and have the electricity, water, internet, phone and other amenities turned off two day after the planned move from the old house. Talk to the companies in charge of those things and have them turned on two days before the planned move to the new house.

Being organized and prepared will make the move to a new location more fluent and easier. Remember these tips to guide you in your moving process!

If you are moving and looking for long distance movers, like most things you can really just go on the internet and take a look around to find services in your area. In fact, a lot of the time you can even find an online calculator to figure out exactly how much it is going to cost. However, when you are using a calculator, or you are even talking to someone to get a quote on the price of your moving project, beware. You need to know how far you are traveling, which is the easiest part. You also need to make sure you know approximately how many items you’re taking and the weight of the items.

Another thing you might want to consider using to make your move easier are pods. Pods are becoming a pretty popular way to move because it makes everything really simple for you without necessarily forcing you to hire movers to do it. The pod is dropped off outside the place you are moving from, so your home or your apartment, and left there until you ask them to pick it up.

Once they come back and pick it up, you have two options, which is also very convenient. If you are moving of course you will want them to deliver to wherever you are going, but the other option is to have the company to take the pod back to their facility and they will store it for you for a fee.
